“Pacing when you’re with others takes confidence. It’s one thing to use a timer at home, but something else to stand up or lie down in a public place or a meeting. But it can be done, and people can be surprisingly supportive if you explain your needs in a straightforward way. Be patient with yourself if you don’t always manage that: it isn’t easy. I still find it difficult to stand out from the crowd in this kind of way, despite years of practice.”
